"Can You Just Install It?" Why Labor-Only Installs Usually Cost More Than They Save

We get this question more than you might think.

A homeowner has already purchased a window, a door, or siding panels — maybe they found a deal online, maybe a family member picked something up, maybe they just want to save a few dollars by splitting the job. And they call us and ask: "Can you just come install it?"

It's a fair question. And we always answer it honestly.

The short answer is no — and the reason isn't just about protecting our bottom line. It's about protecting yours, too.

The Window Story We've Told More Than Once

Let us tell you something we've seen firsthand. A homeowner calls and asks us to install windows they've already purchased elsewhere... windows that were measured and ordered by someone else. We show up on the day of the install, ready to work.

The windows don't fit.

Not slightly off. Not close enough to make it work. Just wrong — wrong size, wrong configuration, wrong rough opening. And now the homeowner is stuck: they've paid for windows they can't use, they still have old windows in their home, and they need to start the process over from scratch. What started as a way to save money turned into paying for windows twice.

We've seen this happen with windows. We've seen it with doors. We've seen it with materials that were stored improperly and arrived damaged. And every single time, it breaks our heart because it was completely avoidable.

Why We Don't Separate the Product from the Install

When Kenco supplies and installs your windows, doors, or exterior materials, we own the entire process. That matters for a few specific reasons:

Measurement accuracy is everything. Our craftsmen measure your openings before anything is ordered. We know what's behind your walls. We know how your home was built, how it's settled over the years, and what a proper fit actually requires. There's no guessing.

We stand behind what we install. Our workmanship warranty means something because we controlled the whole job — the product and the labor. When a contractor installs a product they didn't supply, the manufacturer may void the warranty, and the installer has no obligation to cover a product they didn't sell you. If something goes wrong, you're often left with no one accountable.

Product quality is part of what we evaluate. We source from vendors we trust after years of learning which products hold up and which ones don't. When a customer brings us a product we've never worked with from a source we can't verify, we have no way to stand behind it — and we won't pretend otherwise.

"It breaks our heart because it was completely avoidable."

"But It's Just a Simple Job"

We understand that logic. And the truth is, some jobs really are straightforward which is actually why we take this position seriously. When a job is simple and everything lines up, any contractor could do it. But when something goes wrong mid-install, you need someone with the experience to recognize the problem, adapt, and fix it correctly.

We've been doing this since 1987. We've seen almost everything. And what we've learned is that the "simple jobs" are often the ones where the hidden complications live.

We're Not the Right Fit for Every Job

Here's something else worth knowing: Kenco doesn't do everything. We specialize in exterior work: windows, doors, roofing, siding, sunrooms, gutters, and related exterior improvements. When someone calls us about interior doors, for example, we often refer them to Mrs. K's Home Repair and Construction, a trusted local handyman service we've built a strong working relationship with.

We refer customers there because we know the work will be done right and the customer will be taken care of. That's what a good referral means.

But here's the flip side of that relationship: when a customer asks Mrs. K's about replacing an exterior door slab, Mrs. K's sends them right back to us. Not because they can't swing a hammer, but because they know, from experience, that exterior door work is specialized, and that doing it the wrong way creates problems a handyman call can't fix later.

That kind of mutual respect between tradespeople is built on seeing the same mistakes play out over the years. We refer what we don't do. We do what we know.

What You're Actually Getting When You Hire Kenco

When you get a quote from us, the price includes more than labor. It includes:

  • Expert measurement before anything is ordered

  • Product sourcing from vetted vendors we trust

  • A workmanship warranty that covers both product and install

  • Decades of experience knowing what can go wrong and how to prevent it

  • One point of accountability if something ever needs attention

Splitting the product from the install to save a few hundred dollars sounds reasonable. But when it goes sideways, the cost of fixing it almost always exceeds what you would have spent doing it right the first time.

We're not trying to sell you more than you need. We're trying to make sure you only have to do this once.
